Dorothy Martin: Rock’s Fearless Voice on Style, Wellness, and Authenticity
With powerhouse vocals, a string of Top 10 Billboard Mainstream Rock hits, and collaborations with legends like Dolly Parton and Slash, Dorothy Martin – the voice behind the rock band DOROTHY – has made her mark on music. But beyond the stage, Dorothy is just as intentional about her style, wellness, and mindset. From early-morning workouts and mindful nutrition to timeless fashion staples and self-care rituals, she shares how she stays grounded while navigating the intensity of life on tour. In this candid interview, Dorothy opens up about everything from beauty routines and fitness to faith, authenticity, and the confidence it takes to thrive in today’s world.
How would you describe your style in three words?
Edgy, feminine, elegant
Who or what has been your biggest fashion inspiration – musicians, eras, designers?
I admire and draw inspiration from many people and designers… Stevie Nicks, Angelina Jolie, Rachel Zoe, Rose McGowan, Dita Von Teese, Florence Welch, Kate Moss, Chloe, Thierry Mugler, Hedi Slimane, Anna Sui, Saint Laurent, Cavalli, and Galliano to name a few!
Are there any beauty or skincare rituals you swear by?
I learned how to give myself facials as a teen. A longtime friend of mine is a licensed esthetician and taught me how to properly care for my skin. I steam, cleanse, exfoliate, and use mud masks. I love the Hungarian brand Eminence, especially their organic serums. Los Angeles–based spa RAYA used to be my go-to for regular facials, and they make their own products in the USA which are amazing. RAYA’s Bio-Sulfur Masque is a deep pore cleansing clay mask that’s great for calming redness and breakouts. I also use EltaMD facial sunscreen for acne-prone skin and apply it anytime I go outdoors for walks, runs, hikes, and more. When my skin really needs a tune-up, I do IPL laser treatments.
What are your top three beauty products, and why?
RAYA’s Bio-Sulfur Masque is my go-to for calming angry skin. Caudalie Beauty Elixir Spray always travels in my suitcase, it’s incredibly refreshing. Revision Skincare YouthFull Lip Replenisher™ is the best lip treatment I’ve found, perfect for extremely dry lips. My lips tend to dry out in hotels, on airplanes, or even sleeping on tour buses, so this is an absolute lifesaver!
You’re in great shape, what’s your workout routine?
I rise before 5 a.m. to work out as often as I can and make regular use of the traditional sauna. I prioritize beauty rest, stay well-hydrated, and devote time to daily prayer. I love running, Muay Thai, boxing, and strength training with weights. Lately, I’ve been paying closer attention to my daily step count. One area I’m working on improving is getting more sunshine, our bodies need Vitamin D.
Do you follow a special diet – what do eat in a typical day?
I eat clean, organic food whenever possible, but as a foodie, I have to remember to keep it balanced. I love trying new foods and restaurants, especially when I’m on tour. A good meal is essential when you’re working hard. I also enjoy cooking at home and think I’ve mastered the Hungarian dish Paprikás Csirke by now! My typical day includes organic eggs, sourdough toast, a homemade salad, protein smoothies, chicken salad, some fruit, nuts, and maybe a piece of dark chocolate.
Tour life can be physically and emotionally intense. What does wellness look like for you when you’re constantly on the road?
I take supplements and vitamins regularly, and glutathione injections have made an enormous difference – I haven’t been sick once since starting this protocol. I prioritize sleep and staying hydrated, but the most important focus for me is managing my inner world. I strive daily for a connection and relationship with God. Maintaining a spiritual life of prayer and gratitude is essential to me. I can become negative when I’m run down or tired, but when I notice myself drifting, I turn my attention back to my faith and ask God for peace, strength, and serenity. You can do all the right things for your body, but what good are they if you do not take care of your heart and soul?
Do you feel pressure as a woman in rock to look a certain way, or have you reached a place of dressing purely for yourself?
I dress in whatever makes me feel good! If I’m not comfortable in something, it’s a no. I want to exude confidence and be at ease. Each of us is unique, and there’s no point in pressuring yourself to be like someone else.
In a world of filters and constant editing, do you think social media is helping or hurting how women feel about their real faces and bodies?
I think it can be toxic when we get carried away with unrealistic beauty standards. How can anyone live up to the impossible ideals we see? I fall victim to it myself at times. I’m not against editing, but we can’t lose sight of what makes us uniquely human. We are beautiful and created in God’s image! I also notice many women trying to keep up with filters and “perfect” AI models online. They have no soul, they are not human. We shouldn’t compare ourselves to them; instead, we should celebrate what makes each of us uniquely ourselves.
What’s your opinion on cosmetic surgery and aesthetics such as Botox and fillers?
I’m not against it at all, as long as it’s done artistically and you still look like yourself, just a little better. That’s just my personal opinion, of course. Everyone has their own taste.
What does ‘feeling beautiful’ mean to you?
Feeling beautiful means being healthy inside and out, having a sense of purpose, experiencing joy, peace, and serenity, doing what you love, and showing kindness and compassion to others. That is when I feel most beautiful.
If you could give one piece of style advice to women who admire your confidence, what would it be?
I like to always have at least one strong black leather jacket, a pair of cowboy boots, and big black sunglasses in my wardrobe at all times. Oh, and a bold red lip – it’s simple, elegant, and classic.
What does a perfect day off look like for you?
A peaceful walk outdoors, reading a good book, spending time with loved ones, or a nice spa day with a deep tissue massage.
What’s something you’re learning to say no to?
I no longer tolerate narcissistic abuse. I’ve had deeply damaging experiences with people like this, and it’s hard to truly understand unless you’ve been through it yourself. If I notice signs of this disordered personality, I run the other way immediately. Sometimes I share information on my social media to raise awareness, and if it helps someone trapped in this cycle of abuse find a way out or gain closure, then that’s a good thing.
What’s one thing you’re excited about right now?
Making more music!
